I'll be back to gardening...er...I mean watering tomorrow. I need to find an I HATE DROUGHTS bumper sticker or something.
As some of you know, I'm a schoolteacher in the Texas public school system. It's been a very difficult year for the state and the budget cuts were severe. Our district has tried to save as many jobs as possible, but I still had to say good-bye to many dear friends yesterday. I'm sure this will all work out. I guess we'll all find out together.
So whose's left at my school? Who are the survivors?
There are many. But perhaps the most extraordinary group are the handful of staff that opened our elementary school 30 years ago and are still going strong. They deserve a bit of recognition.
Now with all the sad news in Texas education these days, you are probably wondering why we are laughing. Well, it's an inside joke. You see, the teacher taking the photo couldn't get us all in the picture while we were standing. She told some of us to kneel down. As she was snapping the photo, somebody mumbled, "And how are they going to get up? "
I can happily report we were not left on the floor.
30th year of teaching is DONE!
Congratulations, David and all in the group. That is an amazing achievement. 30 years teaching is certainly something to be proud of, but 30 years at the same school is just wonderful.
ReplyDeleteI haven't got long to go myself before I reach the 30th year mark, but I rarely hear of anyone staying at the same school for that length of time. Over here we get transferred quite a bit over a lengthy career. This is my longest stint at a school ... 11 years so far! Maybe they've just taken pity on an old chook and decided to leave me alone for a while, lol!
Congratulations! I know it has been a difficult two years for me as well. I've been teaching 15 years and can't believe the things that are going on in education. This year Texas and Wisconsin were hit and it seems to be a national trend. For the sake of American kids, I hope our system is saved. There is some restructuring that needs to happen for it to work out, but I think it's going to have to get worse before it gets better. All my best! PS. It's okay to escape from the garden every now and then:) These kinds of posts are fun to read!
