These are the beautiful blue eyes of our Texas native white winged dove. After our latest rain, we found it in our driveway. It had been hit by a car and couldn't move. I gently picked it up but could find no bleeding. That was good news. (By the way, I raised doves as a boy.)
I made a nest for it and covered it with a cardboard box with holes.
It calmed down and rested for several hours, but things did not look promising.
Just before dusk, I checked on it and it saw me. It jumped out, took one last look, and took off like a cannon shot!
It was a happy ending!

SPECIAL NOTE:
If you live in Houston, Spring Branch, or Katy and find a wounded or lost WILD animal, you can call or take the animal to the Texas Wildlife Coalition. They are a wonderful group and will even come to your group as a guest speaker! They rehabilitate thousands of injured wildlife each year.
Awwwwww! I'm so glad it was able to make a break from your terrifying care box!
ReplyDeleteJust kidding. That was a really great thing for you to do. Birds are funny sometimes.
What an interesting eye. I often find birds on my patio, some times they are dead and other times they just need to rest. Fortunately there are no cats around to bother them.
ReplyDeleteI am a birder as well so I loved seeing these shot, and hear about the happy ending. :)
ReplyDeleteOh, so helpless littel bird .. very good you give the one with the beautiful blue eyes a helping hand :)
ReplyDeleteIt's fascinating the way the blue circles the eye.
ReplyDeleteAnd what a happy ending to your story!
this dove was lucky ending up at your driveway. seems you took really good care of it and you also got a great closeup of the head
ReplyDeleteIt is a beautiful blue eye. It was so heartening to read about your efforts to save it.
ReplyDeleteWhat fantastic eyes. I was wondering how you got so close. Glad for the happy outcome.
ReplyDeleteI am super envious of his/her permanent eye liner/shadow. lovely photo, great ending too.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful bird! So glad you found her and gave her a helping hand. I have an aunt who is studying to be a wildlife rehabilitator. I also live near Iowa State University where the vet school does that also.
ReplyDeleteStunning!!!
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful dove. I had a similar experience recently when I rescued a homing pigeon from a cat. She didn't want to attempt to fly but we were given a number for the relevant owners association and the owner contacted me 3 days later. The pigeon was improving but still not attempting to fly, she ate lots of food (very messily) and I knew to give her a deep dish of water so she could drink. Owner and pigeon were happily reunited. It had been her very first flight on her own.
ReplyDeleteLucky Blue Eyes to have been rescued by you, David. She's no longer crying.
