I could not decide which Agave shot I liked the best, so I'm posting the collection. Agaves leave what's called bud imprints; a ghost of where the last layer of spikes were pressing into the leaf buds below. I find them hauntingly beautiful. It's especially nice when the leaf color is blue...my favorite color of Agave. I have about 30 species and cultivars and I love them all. Speaking of collections, visit Lisa at

Agave parrasana 'Confederate Rose' (you absolutely MUST click on this one to see the cool scales and bud print!)
Agave lophantha, bud prints, and oak leaf
Agave ferox (just plain bizarre!)
Agave americana with pine needle and shadows
Agave americana (side view with an attempt at symmetry)
Isn't that interesting! Your pictures are really wonderful, lovely! The side view reminds me of desert sand dunes. Cathy
ReplyDeleteHiya Dave/Melanie,
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful plant. I can see that they are addictive and you have such a collection. The texture and colour is unlike any plant I know. And those wonderful thorny edges are so decorative. Thanks for acquainting me with this genus.
I like the second one, and how the oak leaf mimics the teeth of the agave. Nice macros!
ReplyDeleteOh I love them all too. I'm glad you posted them all. Maybe the last one is my favorite- but it's close - love them all!
ReplyDeleteabsolutely gorgeous series!
ReplyDeleteExcellent sharp details in these images.
ReplyDeleteThose are just beautiful! I particularly like that last one ... now I need to get me down to the garden centre and see if they have some agave houseplants! I'm sure I won't kill them, succulents are more forgiving than most, huh?
ReplyDeletewonderful Macros in great color! Hard to pick a favourite but i'll go with Lisas choice
ReplyDeleteGreat shots! I like the details. I notice that you have my "dream" agaves. I want to own some of the red-spined agaves.
ReplyDeleteI would have a hard time choosing too. The thorns of the Agave ferox look like cat claws. Great collection!
ReplyDeleteWonderful photos! I don't grow any agaves, but I find myself drawn to photograph them when I visit public gardens. The bud prints are fascinating!
ReplyDeleteVery cool images! I got a new macro lens for my camera to start exploring my world a little closer.
ReplyDeleteI was just trying to capture agave bud shots yesterday but didn't like any of the results. You got some nice ones!
ReplyDeleteThis is such a fascinating post...so interesting and so unusual. Great work with the macros. Love the bud prints.
ReplyDeleteThanks to all who left a comment. It's always such an encouragement to a beginning photographer to know that others enjoy the photos.
