2013 WEATHER/CLIMATE REVIEW FOR TEXAS GULF COAST

Do you keep a garden journal besides your garden blog? I do....mostly because I record the temperatures and rainfall. To prepare this post, I review an entire year of gardening weather here in my part of Texas. What's funny is the fact that I never remember the weather correctly until I read through my journal. 2013 had its ups and downs, but my best memory is the fact that our long Texas drought started to abate due to floods in both September and October.  November and December were cold and dreary. Children along the Texas coast did not get their surprise snowfall as in years past.
However, this past week gave us our first hard freeze in almost 3 years with a low temperature of 24 degrees Fahrenheit. This was a very brief spike in temperatures, so the damage was minimal.
As I look out the window, the tropical garden has its brown spots, but life will go on. Most of the garden can endure a hard freeze every few years and recover remarkably well.
I hope so.
Stay warm!

  1. Thanks for this retrospective. Such patterns are what we live by in gardening, not so? Looking forward to more gardening news and pictures from you, David!

  2. Sadly, I'm just not organized enough to keep data anywhere else other than my computer - though I guess I could keep some chart on my computer somewhere, if I remembered to update it! :) Thankfully weather sites collect data if I need it. I often wonder what we did before the internet. I guess I would have to become a lot more organized and use my phone a lot more often!
