NEW FENCE ART FOR TROPICAL TEXANA

I really love to paint. I love art and I love gardening. And most of all, I love colors.
I also love to collect ideas and put them together in new ways.
I think most gardeners are that way and for that reason become a creative force in their neighborhoods.
The school term for collecting and combining ideas is 'synthesis'. However, I'm not in school with the kids right now so let's just call it 'having fun with a boat load of ideas'.
My new fence art.

I got the idea for a mural from a number of sources.
First, a Galveston magazine with some cool neighborhood fences set my mind in motion.
I also discovered a minimalist painter in Galveston by the name of Milton Ausherman. He's also a custom woodworker and talented craftsman.
Here's his studio:

I liked his city style, but  wanted to do more.
I needed colors and people in my garden city.
Cat and owner playing on my fence.

I love colors and squares. I also love children's art.
Paul Klee comes to mind. Klee is one of my very favorite artists from the 20th century.
My fence could never look this good, but his paintings give me all kinds of exciting ideas.
A work from Paul Klee.

Klee worked with stylized shapes and wanted to show the 'essence' of an idea rather than
the realistic coverage of a topic. Some call this style childlike while others call it dreamlike or symbolic art.
This is one of his many Tunisian paintings. Do you see the palm trees?

Here's another look at Tunisia. You can see the geometry coming through as well as the abstract ideas of a city. This type of cityscape was what I was after. But I did not want to be in Tunisia. I wanted to be somewhere else closer to home.

So I decided to make a whimsical city inside my garden. I wanted the townspeople to be active and not just standing around. And of course, I wanted it to be COLORFUL! As you can see, I'm not finished, but it's enough for you to get the idea.

Newest part of the garden city.

My garden continues to grow and mix with the city; something I didn't even plan!
Here's a cat climbing a vine (Virginia creeper) while a man plays catch with his pet aardvark.

I think my garden is jealous of the fence. It's always hinting that it wants to be part of the art.
As you can see by the shadows, maybe I will end up in Tunisia after all.  That's what I love about gardening....it's always filled with wonderful surprises.
I'll show you more of the mural in a week.
Thanks for stopping by.

  1. Looks great David! That is a very good idea....similar to our Tucson Botanical garden known as Mi Jardin where one takes art and combines the elements of art etc and mixes it up with plants. I like what you've done. Hope you are enjoying your summer. Chris

  7. I love your fence mural! I just noticed there are a number of comments I need to approve. You mentioned something about the post about our tree is on another site. Yes, they asked permission awhile back, and said they'd put a link to the blog. I thought the site was OK, so let them do it.
