NEW LIFE FOR AN OLD FENCE

I've always been fascinated by birdhouses, especially rustic ones like this.

So, after 30 years, this old fence needed an update.

As you can see, after 30 years of weathering, the wooden planks have a lot of personality and charm.

So instead of a birdhouse, I decided to build a Tillandsia fun house.

Tillandsias are easy to fall in love with. They take no soil, no fertilizer, and need watering
a few times a week as they stay perched on a board.

There are hundreds of varieties and most have charming blooms.

Here in Houston, one small shop sells a bunch of varieties. The garden shop is called "Another Place in Time".
But when it comes to caring for a Tillandsia, I have to laugh.
Here in this part of Texas our native Tillandsia recurvata
grows everywhere with no care at all.
Here they are growing like crazy! It's almost too much of a good thing.
And yes, they are a native species along with their more famous cousin, Spanish moss.

They have a tiny, purple flower that you could easily overlook.
Here's a whole bouquet.

And here's the completed Tillandsia fun house.
Now it's time to build some real birdhouses with the rest of the wood.
That's it for today.
Thanks for stopping by!

  4. Great idea! I have one tilandsias that I kept inside and forgot to water, so I stuck on a plant outside and it is still alive. I have some birdhouses and yard art made from fencing that has lasted years in our humid climate. Love yours!
